John Wheaton

John Wheaton brings decades of professional experience in geology, hydrogeology, water science, and Montana water resources to the Clarks Fork Yellowstone Partnership Board. He served as a research scientist for 33 years with the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology, in both the Billings and Butte Offices. During his career John released 77 peer reviewed publications, helping advance the understanding of groundwater systems across the state.

Throughout his career, John led hydrogeologic studies of groundwater availability, water quality, impacts of energy extraction, mining impacts, reclamation, coal lands, and long-term water resource planning. His work has supported communities, agencies, landowners, and resource managers in better understanding the connections between geology, groundwater, surface water, and land use.

John’s background provides valuable technical insight into the complex water challenges facing the Clarks Fork Yellowstone watershed. He values science-based decision-making, local collaboration, and practical stewardship efforts that support healthy rivers, reliable water resources, multiple uses, and resilient communities.
